A Surya Grahan (solar eclipse) occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking sunlight. In Hindu tradition, eclipses are significant astronomical and spiritual events governed by specific rules rooted in ancient shastra.
Surya Grahan Dates in 2026
- August 12–13, 2026 — Total Solar Eclipse. Visible as a total eclipse across North Africa, Greenland, and the Arctic. Partial eclipse visible in parts of northern India.
- For India specifically, check local panchang for the exact sutak start time (typically 12 hours before the grahan for a solar eclipse).
What Is Sutak Kaal?
Sutak is the period of ritual impurity before a grahan. For a Surya Grahan:
- Sutak begins 12 hours before the eclipse starts
- During sutak, cooking, eating, and sleeping are traditionally avoided
- Pregnant women, the elderly, and children are generally excused from strict sutak observance
- If the grahan is not visible from your location, sutak does not apply according to most traditions
What to Do During Surya Grahan
- Chant mantras: The Surya mantra (Om Hraam Hreem Hraum Sah Suryaya Namah), Mahamrityunjaya mantra, or Gayatri mantra are especially powerful during eclipse
- Meditate and pray: Eclipse time is considered potent for spiritual practice — the energy is amplified
- Take a bath: A ritual bath at the start of grahan and immediately after the eclipse ends
- Donate (daan): Donating food, clothing, or money to the needy at eclipse time is considered highly meritorious
- Place Kusha grass in food and water kept at home to prevent contamination
What to Avoid During Surya Grahan
- Do not eat during grahan kaal (start to end of eclipse) if you observed sutak
- Do not look directly at the Sun — this is both spiritual and scientific advice (use eclipse glasses)
- Avoid surgery or starting new projects during eclipse time
- Pregnant women are advised to stay indoors — a traditional observance
- Do not cook during the grahan period — food prepared during this time is considered impure
After the Eclipse: Griha Shuddhi
After the grahan ends, take a full bath, sprinkle Gangajal throughout the house to purify the space, and wash all utensils and clothes that were out during the eclipse. You may then resume normal activities.
The Science and the Shastra
Modern astronomy explains eclipses as predictable geometric alignments. Ancient shastras understood eclipses as periods of heightened cosmic energy — when the light of the Sun is temporarily diminished. The rules of sutak and ritual practice were designed to ensure people spent this time in reflection rather than mundane activity.
