Truth is one; the wise call it by many names.

भावार्थ

परम सत्य एक ही है, विद्वान लोग उसे अलग-अलग नामों से पुकारते हैं। जिसे कोई राम कहता है, कोई अल्लाह, कोई प्रकृति — वह मूल तत्व एक ही है।

ऋग्वेद का यह मंत्र भारतीय दर्शन की उदारता का मूल है। यह सिखाता है कि सभी उपासना-पद्धतियाँ एक ही परम सत्य की ओर ले जाती हैं। इसी भाव से हिंदू चिंतन में सर्वधर्म समभाव और सहिष्णुता की जड़ें हैं।

Meaning and context

From one of the oldest texts of humanity. The full verse lists names — Indra, Mitra, Varuna, Agni — and then says they are all the one reality, named differently by the wise. It is the root of the Hindu attitude that the one Divine can be worshipped in many forms, and that different traditions may be pointing at the same truth. It is often cited as the scriptural basis for religious tolerance.
