अयं निजः परो वेति गणना लघुचेतसाम्। उदारचरितानां तु वसुधैव कुटुम्बकम्॥

Translation
'This one is mine, that one is a stranger' — so the narrow-minded reckon. For the large-hearted, the whole earth is one family.
भावार्थ
यह अपना है और वह पराया — ऐसी गणना संकीर्ण मन वाले करते हैं। उदार हृदय वालों के लिए तो सम्पूर्ण पृथ्वी ही एक परिवार है।
महा उपनिषद् का यह श्लोक भारतीय विश्वबंधुत्व का उद्घोष है। यह हमें भेदभाव की संकीर्ण दृष्टि से ऊपर उठकर समस्त प्राणियों को अपना समझने की उदार दृष्टि प्रदान करता है।
Meaning and context
The phrase vasudhaiva kutumbakam — 'the world is one family' — comes at the end of this verse, and the verse makes clear it is a description of an open heart, not a slogan. Dividing people into 'mine' and 'others' is the mark of a small mind; a generous person does not draw that line. The saying also appears in the Hitopadesha, and India adopted it as the theme of its G20 presidency in 2023.
