Translation

Arise, awake; approach the great teachers and learn.

भावार्थ

उठो, जागो और तब तक मत रुको जब तक लक्ष्य की प्राप्ति न हो जाए। ज्ञान का मार्ग छुरे की धार के समान कठिन है, पर वीर ही उस पर चलकर अमरता को पाते हैं।

कठ उपनिषद् का यह मंत्र यम द्वारा नचिकेता को दिया गया उपदेश है। स्वामी विवेकानंद ने इसे भारत के युवाओं का जागरण-मंत्र बना दिया। यह हमें आलस्य और अज्ञान की नींद से जागकर आत्म-कल्याण के मार्ग पर दृढ़ता से बढ़ने की प्रेरणा देता है।

Meaning and context

Spoken by Yama, the god of death, to the young seeker Nachiketa. The verse goes on to warn that the path is as sharp as a razor's edge and hard to walk. It is a call out of spiritual sleep: wake up to what matters, and seek out those who can guide you. Swami Vivekananda made it famous in the form 'Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached', which is why it is so often quoted as a call to persevere.
