तत्त्वमसि — वह तुम ही हो

Translation

That thou art, Shvetaketu.

भावार्थ

जिस परम सत्य को तुम बाहर खोज रहे हो, वह तुम्हारे भीतर ही है। जो चेतना समस्त सृष्टि में व्याप्त है, वही तुम्हारे हृदय में भी विद्यमान है।

उद्दालक ऋषि अपने पुत्र श्वेतकेतु को नौ बार यह महावाक्य दोहराते हैं — "तत्त्वमसि" अर्थात् वह ब्रह्म तुम ही हो। यह उपनिषद् का सर्वोच्च संदेश है कि आत्मा और परमात्मा में कोई भेद नहीं। स्वयं को जान लेना ही ईश्वर को जान लेना है।

Meaning and context

One of the four Mahavakyas — the 'great sayings' of the Upanishads. The sage Uddalaka teaches his son Shvetaketu through a series of examples — salt dissolved in water, the tiny seed of a banyan tree — and closes each with the same words: 'That thou art.' The subtle essence that pervades all of creation is the very Self within you. The Upanishad's claim is that the individual self (atman) and the ultimate reality (Brahman) are not two, so to truly know yourself is to know the divine.
