karmaṇy evādhikāras te mā phaleṣu kadācana
— Bhagavad Gita 2.47
Translation
Your right is to action alone, never to its fruits.
Meaning and context
Perhaps the most quoted line of the Bhagavad Gita, spoken by Krishna to Arjuna on the battlefield. The full verse continues: do not let the fruit of action be your motive, and do not be attached to inaction either. It is not a call to stop caring about outcomes; it is a call to act fully and well while letting go of anxiety over results you do not control. This is the core of karma yoga — the path of selfless action.
