सत्यमेव जयते नानृतं सत्येन पन्था विततो देवयानः।
satyam eva jayate nānṛtaṃ satyena panthā vitato devayānaḥ

Translation
Truth alone triumphs, not falsehood. By truth is laid the path of the gods.
भावार्थ
अंततः सत्य की ही विजय होती है, असत्य की नहीं। सत्य के मार्ग से ही वह दिव्य पथ खुलता है जिस पर चलकर ऋषिगण परम पद को प्राप्त करते हैं।
मुण्डक उपनिषद् का यह वाक्य भारत का राष्ट्रीय आदर्श वाक्य है। यह विश्वास दिलाता है कि चाहे असत्य कितना ही प्रबल क्यों न दिखे, अंत में सत्य ही स्थायी रहता है। सत्य केवल नैतिक मूल्य नहीं, अपितु मोक्ष का मार्ग है।
Meaning and context
The first words of this verse are India's national motto, inscribed beneath the Lion Capital of Ashoka on the state emblem. In the Upanishad the sense is deeper than honesty in speech: satya is reality itself, and the devayana — the path by which seekers reach the highest — is built out of truth. Falsehood may appear to win for a while; what endures, and what leads to liberation, is truth.
