annaṃ na nindyāt, tad vratam
— Taittiriya Upanishad 3.7
Translation
Do not disregard food — that is the vow.
Meaning and context
In the Bhriguvalli of the Taittiriya Upanishad, the seeker Bhrigu first realises that 'food is Brahman' (annam brahma), because all beings are born from food, live by food and return to it. From that insight come these vows: do not despise food, do not waste it, and produce it in plenty. Food is not merely fuel but a form of the Divine, which is why it is offered before it is eaten.
